Granite’s Reign Seems to be Declining

According to, granite’s 30-year reign as king of the countertops seems to be declining in favor of some other countertop alternatives, but it is still a solid choice. If you are remodeling your kitchen to sell, you may want to pay some attention to these popular alternatives.

Take a Tour of the Alternatives

Square One Home Improvements can install any of these alternatives to quickly give your kitchen a brand new look. Here is a quick look at the top kitchen countertop contenders:

  1. Engineered Quartz.

Quartz is easily granite’s top contender. Consider the beauty of white quartz in a modern kitchen. It is tougher than granite but is non-porous, so it does not need to be sealed. It is also much more durable. One downside is that it is largely uniform and does not offer the variation of different slabs.

  2. Wood.

One cannot understate the beauty of wood. Many modern kitchen designs incorporate an island with a type of wood, like butcher block. However, wood is porous and must be sealed about once a month. It also is susceptible to damage from heat and moisture. On the other hand, if a wood countertop is damaged, it can be refinished.

  3. Soapstone.

Soapstone is a natural quarried stone that comes in grays and green-blacks. It has some pros and cons that should be considered. While it is non-porous and so resistant to stains, it is a softer stone which means it is susceptible to scratching and deep indentations. The light gray version will likely darken over time. Another interesting consideration is that there will be a seam if your countertop is longer than seven feet.

  4. Concrete.

Concrete kitchen countertops first came on the scene in the 1980’s, and historically, concrete is prone to chips and cracks. But they have improved since that time. Modern precast concrete kitchen countertops are available in a variety of colors, and are now strong and heat-resistant. Concrete countertops can be sealed to prevent staining.

  5. Stainless Steel.

Restaurants install stainless steel countertops primarily because bacteria are unable to thrive in them. They are also heat-, rust-, and stain-resistant. The one negative is that stainless steel countertops can scratch easily. They do present a very modern but industrial look which could be balanced by incorporating some wood into your kitchen remodeling design.
